What Is Sleep Apnea?

Sleep apnea is a disorder that causes repeated pauses in breathing throughout the night. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is the most common form of sleep apnea, and it occurs when tissues in the throat block the free flow of air. Central sleep apnea occurs when the brain does not send the proper breathing signals, and mixed sleep apnea has characteristics of both of the other types.
Common symptoms of OSA include:
- Loud, frequent snoring
- Daytime exhaustion
- Mood swings and irritability
- Frequent nighttime urination
- Observed pauses in breathing
- Frequently waking up with a headache or sore throat
- Difficulty concentrating
The Dangers of Sleep Apnea

Too many people underestimate the seriousness of untreated sleep apnea. Without timely care, it can have devastating consequences for your health and quality of life. For example, it can lead to:
- A heightened risk of systemic health problems. For example, it can contribute to high blood pressure, heart attacks, stroke, diabetes, and dementia.
- A higher risk of accidents. Driving while you are drowsy, or doing other potentially dangerous tasks when you are not well-rested, carries a strong potential for accidents and injuries.
- Emotional and social consequences. Poor-quality sleep can contribute to symptoms of depression and anxiety. This can affect your relationships and your overall quality of life.
Sleep Apnea Treatment Options

Sleep apnea is most commonly treated with a CPAP machine, which uses pressurized air to keep oxygen flowing. Unfortunately, many people dislike their machine because they find it to be uncomfortable and inconvenient. They may get so frustrated that they stop using it!
In our Gilbert practice, we offer an alternative. An oral appliance is a small device, which resembles a mouthguard, that you wear during sleep. It gently repositions your lower jaw in order to keep your airway open. This prevents snoring and pauses in breathing, leading to higher-quality rest. Many patients find that an oral appliance is much easier to use than a CPAP machine.
